Sunshine Solar Cold Storage starts construction on solar-powered facility in Florida

Sunshine Solar Cold Storage has broken ground on a new temperature-controlled facility near the Port of Tampa, Florida. Designed and constructed by Ti Cold, the solar-powered building aims to meet growing regional cold-chain demand while advancing sustainable infrastructure.

The 151,000-square-foot facility will include over 32,316 pallet positions with a mobile racking system to maximize storage density. An AI-powered warehouse management system will support operations by optimizing inventory flow and space utilization. Due to limited land availability, the facility has been engineered to sit above an on-site retention pond.

“Our vision is to build a modern, state-of-the-art facility powered entirely by solar energy,” said Alex Baumer, Vice President and Partner of Sunshine Solar Cold Storage.

Once completed, the facility is expected to create over 70 full-time jobs in the Gibsonton area, supporting logistics, operations, and technical roles. The location near the Port of Tampa is intended to strengthen regional supply-chain capabilities.

“From a solar-powered energy strategy to an elevated structure over a retention pond, this project demonstrates what’s possible when innovation leads the design process,” said Sam Tippmann, President of Ti Cold.

Operations are scheduled to begin in summer 2027.
