Hudson Technologies has signed a joint development agreement with Icorium Company to commercialize Icorium’s patented extractive distillation technology for refrigerant separation.
The collaboration is intended to complement Hudson’s existing fractional distillation systems. Icorium’s single-stream extractive method is being developed to separate complex refrigerant mixtures into their core components, including azeotropes, with the goal of increasing processing speed, yield and throughput.
According to Hudson, the technology could allow contractors to combine refrigerants in cylinders, reducing onsite recovery time. It is also intended to enable Hudson to recover more refrigerant from collected material and accelerate conversion from recovered stock to saleable product.
Under the agreement, Hudson will receive dedicated access to Icorium’s engineering resources and intellectual property related to refrigerant separation technologies. The agreement also provides exclusivity and first-mover advantages during the initial commercialization period and early access to additional separation technologies.
“With Icorium’s technology, we seek to separate complex refrigerant blends with greater speed and efficiency than traditional fractional distillation, substantially enhancing our capabilities and capacity,” said Ken Gaglione, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hudson Technologies.
Dr. Kalin Baca, co-founder and CEO of Icorium, said the companies aim to scale the patented distillation technology to support refrigerant recovery and reclamation, adding that the combination of Hudson’s scale and market reach with Icorium’s technology may create commercialization pathways for a circular refrigerant supply chain.
