LG Establishes R&D Lab in Germany to Boost European HVAC Solutions

LG Electronics (LG) is setting up a new Air Solution Research and Development (R&D) Lab in Frankfurt, Germany. This state-of-the-art facility will join LG's existing labs in Changwon, South Korea, and Atlanta, Georgia, USA, creating a global R&D triangle.

The new 10,000-square-foot lab will focus on developing high-efficiency heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions tailored to Europe's diverse climates. The lab will research and test a range of residential and light commercial HVAC systems, including heat pumps and energy management platforms. By executing a locally-focused R&D program, LG aims to reinforce its ability to provide HVAC solutions specifically designed for the European market.

The Frankfurt lab will also collaborate with LG's European Consortium for Advanced Heat Pump Research to develop reliable heat pumps capable of high performance during Northern Europe's harsh winters. LG plans to recruit and nurture local talent in heat pump design and smart home technology to bolster its European HVAC business.

The European HVAC market is poised for significant growth, driven by the European Union's (EU) ambitious energy policies, including the REPowerEU plan and the EU-led Green Deal. These policies aim to reduce energy consumption, expand renewable energy sources, and decrease carbon emissions, ultimately achieving a carbon-neutral society by 2050.

Demand for high-efficiency electrical products, particularly heat pumps, has surged due to these policies, as they offer reduced carbon emissions compared to conventional fossil-fuel-driven systems. LG's HVAC solutions, including ultra-efficient heat pumps, are highly competitive thanks to their advanced core component technology.

To drive B2B growth and enhance management efficacy, LG is developing a comprehensive local system covering all operational areas, from R&D and sales to maintenance and customer service. LG has also expanded its network of HVAC academies to 62 locations in 43 countries, training over 30,000 HVAC engineers annually.
