Refrec Reclaim Streamlines Refrigerant Recovery at London Office Tower

Refrec Reclaim has successfully removed 750kg of R134a refrigerant from a 35-storey office block in central London, executing the project in just six hours. This rapid operation took place at the Broadgate Tower, the tallest building in the Broadgate Campus.

Contracted by Advanced Compressor Engineering Services, Refrec Reclaim utilized Beijer Ref's efficient refrigerant recovery system to facilitate maintenance of a York VSD liquid chiller. The quick six-hour removal minimized downtime, achieving a recovery rate of 125kg per hour. This was enabled by specialist connectors, optimizing flow rates for York equipment and carried on the Refrec Reclaim vehicle.

Post-removal, the refrigerant was stored in 16 recovery cylinders and later returned to the chiller after maintenance. Refrec Reclaim managed all cylinder logistics and paperwork with FGASmanager software.

This solution proved both time and cost-effective, minimizing on-site presence for the client and accelerating refrigerant recovery processes for systems with a 100kg charge or more. Alec Stilling, Head of Product Development at Beijer Ref UK, highlighted the service's benefits for not only maintenance but also dismantling and retrofitting projects. "The process simplifies the recovery of higher GWP refrigerants, crucial as we phase out F-gases and transition to lower-GWP and natural refrigerants," he explained.
