A new report highlights the Philippines' expertise in adopting international safety standards for refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pumps (RACHP) as national norms through the Cool Contributions fighting Climate Change (C4) and C4II projects. The Philippines leverages IEC 60335-2-24 and IEC 60335-2-40 vertical product standards for technical regulations on cooling appliances.
Recently, the country adopted the ISO 5149 series and ISO 817 for refrigerants, setting the stage for a transition to low GWP refrigerants, particularly natural options. Unlike its Southeast Asian neighbors, the Philippines emphasizes standards conformity to safely introduce alternative substances, aligning with the Kigali Amendments to the Montreal Protocol. This approach aims to replace arbitrary restrictions related to refrigerant flammability, toxicity, or pressure with standardized safety measures.
