GEA launches AI-based energy optimization tool for cooling and heating systems

GEA has introduced GEA OptiPartner Blu-Red Energy, a cloud-based software solution designed to optimize the performance of compressors, chillers, heat pumps, and entire cooling plants. The digital application uses intelligent algorithms to deliver real-time system optimization, aiming to reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

The solution relies on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to continuously analyze plant and environmental data. It then transmits optimal setpoints to the plant’s control system using GEA’s cloud infrastructure. According to GEA, depending on the system setup, energy savings of up to 20% are achievable, allowing for a potential return on investment within one year.

GEA OptiPartner Blu-Red Energy connects to a plant via the GEA Cloud using standard protocols such as Modbus over 4G or IoT networks. The platform supports various optimization features, including condensing pressure control, refrigerant management, and sequential machine operation. The software also includes digital twin technology, enabling users to compare actual and optimal performance. Customers receive monthly reports with detailed energy efficiency analyses in kilowatt-hours and local currency.

Implementation of Blu-Red Energy requires a GEA Omni panel and connectivity to the GEA Cloud. Once these are in place, GEA states the system can be operational in less than a week, depending on plant configuration. The software is currently available for air-cooled and evaporative condenser chillers and full installations equipped with Omni panels. Additional system types are under development.

In a pilot project with Dutch biscuit manufacturer Verkade, part of Pladis, the system delivered energy savings of 33,000 kWh (approx. EUR 6,000) over ten months. GEA reports that the pilot also led to improved dashboard usability based on customer feedback, making operational data more accessible.
