Germany trains international RAC technicians in natural refrigerants

Fourteen refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) technicians from eleven countries completed the 2025 Cool Training in Maintal, Germany, gaining practical and theoretical knowledge on natural refrigerants. Participants included professionals from South Africa, Seychelles, Mongolia, and Colombia.

The training was conducted by the Bundesfachschule Kälte-Klima-Technik (BFS), one of Europe’s largest refrigeration schools. It targeted specialized RAC experts and trainers from vocational institutions, who are expected to share the acquired skills within their home regions.

The curriculum focused on the use of natural refrigerants in commercial systems, with a particular emphasis on propane (R290) and carbon dioxide (R744). Ammonia (R717) was also part of the training, including a site visit to a Nordfrost frozen goods warehouse in Groß-Gerau, Hesse, where R717 systems are in use.

The international training was organized by GIZ Proklima on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection through the International Climate Initiative (IKI).
