Octopus Energy has unveiled the Cosy Cooler, a cooling add-on designed to turn existing Cosy heat pump systems into home air-conditioning systems. Developed by British engineers, the device is scheduled to become available in 2027, with a retail price of £500–£600 (approximately $670–$800), compared with £2,000–£6,000 (approximately $2,680–$8,040) for traditional air-conditioning installations.
The portable unit, approximately the size of a tall kitchen bin, connects directly to existing radiator pipework and is expected to take around three hours to install without major building work. It requires no outdoor exhaust hose and can cool individual rooms. Depending on the Cosy heat pump model, up to two or three units can operate simultaneously in different rooms.
The Cosy Cooler draws warm air from the room, removes heat through a heat exchanger and returns cooled air to the space. The extracted heat is transferred through the heating pipework to the outdoor Cosy heat pump, where it is released. According to Octopus Energy, water temperatures in the pipework are maintained at levels that prevent condensation and dripping radiators.
Octopus Energy reports receiving 570,000 heat pump enquiries over the past 18 months. The company also states that 99% of its Cosy customers pay less to operate their heat pumps than they would with gas boilers, with average annual savings of £230 (approximately $310).
Live trials of the Cosy Cooler are underway in homes and offices, and Octopus Energy is seeking additional testers. Greg Jackson, founder and chief executive of Octopus Energy, said: “The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has helped give the industry the confidence to invest, innovate and drive costs down – and Cosy Cooler is the latest result of Octopus ingenuity.”
