Refra’s Ignis Heat Pump Wins Prestigious Industry Award for Innovation and Sustainability at Keeling’s Facility

Refra’s Ignis Heat Pump Wins Prestigious Industry Award for Innovation and Sustainability at Keeling’s Facility

Refra’s cutting-edge Ignis reversible heat pump, installed at Keeling’s €20 million flower processing facility in St Margaret’s, County Dublin, has been honored with the “Heat Pump System of the Year” award at the 2024 Institute of Refrigeration Ireland (IRI) Industry Awards. This advanced propane heat pump, operational since July 2023, has significantly contributed to sustainability and energy efficiency at the facility.

Keeling’s, a third-generation family business specializing in fresh produce, prioritized sustainability in the design of its 8,500m² facility. Anglo Irish Refrigeration, a local Refra partner, specified the Refra Ignis heat pump for the project, delivering 101.6kW of cooling and 120kW of heating capacity. The heat pump, combined with a Refra chiller, plays a critical role in capturing and reusing heat from refrigerated areas, minimizing energy consumption.

Heat pumps are increasingly favored in industrial applications due to their lower refrigerant use and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Refra, a pioneer in natural refrigerant technology, has been manufacturing propane-based heat pumps since 2011. The company’s heat pumps use R290 (propane), an efficient, low-GWP refrigerant that meets EU F-gas regulation standards, which aim to phase out high-GWP refrigerants.

Refra’s propane systems are designed with safety in mind, adhering to the EN378 standard, which ensures safe operation in various environments through features like pressure relief devices, leak detection systems, and emergency shutdown mechanisms.

Breakthrough in Efficiency with Magnetic Expansion Valves

Refra’s commitment to innovation extends to its collaboration with Siemens, where they tested magnetic expansion valves (MEVs) in their heat pumps. The results showed a notable improvement in performance, with the heat pump delivering up to 21% more heat while using 14% less energy, thanks to the rapid response and precise control of the Siemens MVL702 MEV.

This industry recognition solidifies Refra’s position as a leader in sustainable refrigeration and heating solutions, providing high-efficiency systems that help businesses meet their sustainability goals. The success of the Ignis heat pump at Keeling’s facility highlights Refra’s ability to deliver innovative, environmentally friendly solutions for modern industrial needs.
