Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) has expanded its STEM Traineeship Programme to Nigeria and Mozambique, providing young women with technical, digital and analytical training for careers in the energy sector. Supported by Iceland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the programme focuses on energy access, renewable energy deployment and workforce skills development.

Launched in 2022, the programme has trained 46 women across nine countries in Africa and Latin America. The expansion aims to align technical skills development with national energy access and climate mitigation goals.

In Mozambique, trainees will support a rural electrification initiative involving SEforALL, the Belgian Agency for International Cooperation (Enabel) and Mozambique’s National Energy Fund (FUNAE). Funded by the Green Climate Fund, the project aims to improve energy access, strengthen rural economies and avoid an estimated 399,131 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions. Trainees will also support the deployment of 300 to 400 climate-smart Productive Uses of Renewable Energy (PURE) solutions for rural value chains.

In Nigeria, the programme will prepare young female professionals to contribute to energy and finance system planning. According to figures cited by SEforALL, approximately 80 million Nigerians lack electricity access, while another 150 million experience unreliable power. The initiative also addresses reported shortages of technical and digital skills needed for the green economy.

The traineeship combines activity-based technical training with soft skills and leadership development. It targets early-career women in STEM fields, with a focus on increasing female participation in the energy workforce.

“The SEforALL STEM Traineeship is an opportunity to build on my technical foundation while developing a deeper understanding of the planning and inclusion side of the transition. I hope to grow into a professional who can help make sure Nigeria’s energy systems are built with the people they’re meant to serve in mind,” said Peace Terna, a 2026 Nigerian STEM trainee.
