Carrier Japan Deploys Temporary Cooling System at Japan’s Tallest Tower Project

Carrier Japan is participating in the development of a temporary cooling system designed to mitigate heat stress at the TOKYO TORCH Torch Tower construction site in Japan. Led by Shimizu Corporation, the project uses Carrier air conditioning equipment to improve worker comfort during construction of what is set to become Japan’s tallest building.

The system addresses a limitation of conventional spot coolers, which discharge exhaust heat into the same indoor space. Instead, the new solution directs exhaust heat outside the building through openings in the curtain wall structure, improving cooling conditions within the construction area.

The installation incorporates Carrier Japan’s Single Ace u packaged air-cooled air conditioning units mounted on dedicated movable platforms, allowing relocation as construction progresses. Integrated supply and exhaust ductwork and a specialized heat-rejection mechanism are designed to accommodate the thermal conditions of high-rise construction sites.

Before deployment, Carrier Japan conducted performance evaluations at its Fuji Operations facility in the presence of Shimizu representatives. Testing replicated construction site conditions and verified airflow and cooling performance with supply and exhaust ducts connected. The system also incorporates Carrier ABOUND for remote monitoring of equipment operating conditions. An ongoing field validation program is evaluating its potential to support stable operation and maintenance efficiency where physical access is restricted.

“This joint development project with Shimizu demonstrates how we can combine our engineering-to-order capabilities with our deep HVAC expertise to rapidly customize, validate and deploy solutions for highly specialized applications,” said Mineo Maruyama, President of Carrier Japan.
