Exergyn, Magnotherm and Pascal have announced the formation of the Solid Cooling Coalition (SCC), an international initiative focused on accelerating the commercialization of solid-state cooling and heating technologies.
The three companies are developing different cooling technologies based on solid materials. Exergyn uses nickel-titanium shape-memory alloys, Magnotherm develops magnetocaloric cooling technology, and Pascal works with barocaloric materials based on perovskites. These approaches offer alternatives to conventional vapor-compression refrigeration without relying on gaseous refrigerants.
One of the coalition’s main objectives is to establish common methods for measuring cooling capacity and system efficiency. SCC also aims to harmonize performance metrics and reporting standards across academia and industry, support technology-neutral efficiency standards, and establish consistent criteria for assessing technological readiness.
The coalition plans to develop a commercialization roadmap with defined milestones and identify opportunities for collaboration across supply chains. Its priorities also include attracting investment through catalytic capital, public-private partnerships, grants and strategic corporate funding.
By establishing shared testing and reporting methods, SCC aims to address challenges in comparing different solid-state cooling technologies with each other and with conventional refrigeration systems. These efforts could support their adoption in commercial refrigeration, air conditioning and other cooling applications.
