MCI Unveils Star Cool 1.1: A Decarbonization Milestone in Reefer Technology

Maersk Container Industry (MCI) has launched the Star Cool 1.1, the world’s first reefer cooling machine adaptable to three alternative refrigerants, setting a new industry benchmark through its energy-efficient and eco-friendly design.

“After completion of an extensive R&D and verification program we are excited to offer our customers the first reefer solution that offers adaptability to 3 alternative refrigerants while operating with the highest energy efficiency in the market – thereby delivering a significant advancement in reducing the environmental impact from reefer container operation,’’ – said Søren Leth Johannsen, CEO at MCI.

The Star Cool 1.1 employs the climate-friendly refrigerant R1234yf, known for its ultra-low Global Warming Potential (GWP). This pioneering initiative allows the unit to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from refrigerants effectively, without sacrificing energy efficiency. The machine also uses 8% less energy than previous models, thanks to advancements in compressor technology and design optimization. This next-generation compressor enables faster temperature control, enhancing cargo care.

The Star Cool 1.1 also features a built-in energy meter which wirelessly transmits data through the Sekstant solution, allowing operators to track energy savings and convert this information into carbon footprint data for specific voyages or periods.

By remaining adaptable to evolving global refrigerant regulations and environmental standards, the Star Cool 1.1 ensures both sustainability and operational excellence, supporting the broader decarbonization goals of the shipping industry.
