COPA Launches Carbon Market Training for Refrigerant Emission Mitigation

The Climate and Ozone Protection Alliance (COPA), under GIZ’s Proklima programme, has introduced a new online training course titled “Cooling Carbon Markets,” aimed at professionals in the refrigeration and cooling sector. The course focuses on the application of carbon market mechanisms to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from refrigerants, aligning with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

Developed in cooperation with COPA member Energy Changes and the Cooling Program for Southern Africa (CooPSA), the training is hosted on GIZ’s digital learning platform Atingi. It is available to a global audience, with a primary focus on stakeholders in COPA member countries. The course is tailored for officials from national ozone units, environmental policymakers, and refrigeration professionals with a technical background in refrigerants but limited exposure to carbon market finance.

Participants will gain insights into how carbon markets can be leveraged to support the transition to climate-friendly cooling technologies. The course highlights the intersection of the Kigali Amendment, the Paris Agreement, and the creation of high-integrity carbon projects aimed at refrigerant emission reduction.

By equipping participants with the necessary tools to design and implement mitigation initiatives, the course aims to support the development of sustainable and financially viable refrigerant management strategies across developing and emerging economies.

“The course is designed to bridge the gap between technical refrigerant knowledge and the financial tools available through carbon markets,” said a COPA representative involved in the project.
