UNEP and Syria strengthen coordination on Montreal Protocol implementation

UNEP OzonAction’s Compliance Assistance Programme for West Asia and Syria’s Ministry of Local Administration and Environment held a national stakeholder consultation to support implementation of the Montreal Protocol and its Kigali Amendment.

The meeting brought together 76 representatives from government institutions, customs, industry, academia, standards bodies, professional associations and vocational training institutions. Participants reviewed Syria’s Montreal Protocol obligations, the hydrochlorofluorocarbon Phase-out Management Plan, Kigali Amendment preparations, national regulations and energy efficiency considerations.

Discussions also addressed an integrated refrigerant life-cycle management approach and the need to strengthen national coordination. Priorities included reinforcing the National Ozone Unit, establishing an operational National Ozone Committee and improving cooperation between public and private stakeholders.

For the refrigeration and air-conditioning servicing sector, participants highlighted capacity building, updated national RAC standards and upgraded technical training in vocational institutions. UNEP said it will continue working with national partners to strengthen institutional capacity and support implementation of the Montreal Protocol and Kigali Amendment.
