U.S. HVACR mechanic employment projected to grow 8% through 2034

Employment of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers in the United States is projected to grow 8% from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations. The occupation is expected to add 34,500 jobs over the period, rising from 425,200 jobs in 2024.

About 40,100 openings are projected each year on average during the decade. Many are expected to result from workers transferring to other occupations or leaving the labor force, including retirement.

The median annual wage for HVACR mechanics and installers was $59,810 in May 2024, equivalent to $28.75 per hour.

Workers install and repair heating, ventilation, cooling and refrigeration systems in homes, schools, hospitals and other buildings. They may work in cramped spaces, outdoors or in extreme temperatures, and schedules may vary.

Entry typically requires a postsecondary nondegree award, although some workers enter with less education. New hires generally complete long-term on-the-job training and may need a license or certification.
