The latest AREA internal survey reveals a significant rise in the number of F-gas certified personnel trained in alternative refrigerants across Europe since 2021. Approximately 367,000 RACHP personnel are F-Gas certified in 18 EU countries. With the new F-gas Regulation adopted in February 2024, the estimated need for more than 115,000 trained technicians is likely underestimated.
HFOs training has the highest rate at 40% but varies significantly across EU countries. HCs training stands at 29% and 19%, depending on equipment size, while 21% of F-gas personnel are trained on CO2, and 12% on Ammonia.
The new regulation’s mandatory certification for alternative refrigerants could mitigate potential contractor shortages. To achieve EU heat pump objectives, an estimated 150,000 technicians are needed by 2027, rising to 300,000 by 2030. The sector must prepare for minimal F-gas use by 2030, focusing on reclaimed refrigerants for maintenance. Training and certification for a future without F-gas are essential.
