Daikin has introduced a new Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU) designed for high-density AI data center applications, with orders scheduled to open on November 1, 2027. The unit transfers thermal energy between the Facility Water System (FWS) and Technology Cooling System (TCS), supporting temperature management in environments with high thermal loads.
The CDU range offers cooling capacities from 400 kW (approximately 1.36 million BTU/h) to 2.5 MW (approximately 8.53 million BTU/h) per unit. Up to ten CDUs can operate in parallel under centralized temperature and pressure control. Daikin also offers preassembled skid solutions integrating multiple units for larger installations, with configurations suitable for new projects and retrofits.
For operational reliability, the CDU incorporates redundant pumps, duplicated temperature and pressure sensors, integrated leak detection and advanced alarm management. The hydraulic circuit uses AISI 316L stainless steel with grooved mechanical couplings instead of welded joints. Front-side service access and sliding rails for pump removal are designed to simplify maintenance and component replacement.
Daikin’s proprietary controller coordinates multiple CDUs and adjusts TCS operating parameters using variable-speed pumps and flow, pressure and temperature measurements. A modulating valve with an equal-percentage control characteristic and high-speed actuator regulates heat transfer between the FWS and TCS circuits to control TCS outlet temperature.
Alongside the CDU launch, Daikin is expanding its Intelligent Data Center Manager (iDCM) platform beyond chilled water plant control to cover equipment within the data hall. The platform supports centralized monitoring of CDUs, CRAHs, AHUs and Fan Wall systems, including real-time temperatures, equipment status and alarms. It also provides diagnostic functions and integration with existing Building Management Systems (BMS).
